My Story

George Kao Financial Planner Advisor | Reach One Teach One Financial | R1T1 | George Kao CFP ChFC CRPC MBA

My philosophy is to help as many as possible (Reach) while making those I'm helping smarter and savvier with their finances (Teach), all with an eternal focus.

I got here through divine intervention.  That's right!  If God didn't make me walk down this path, I might have never taken the leap.

"My plans aren’t your plans, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord."

                                                                       -Isaiah 55:8

You see, I spent the first 25 years of my career focused on building some of the world's most innovative technologies (at that time).  This was what I was trained in.  Some of these cool techs include virtual classrooms and virtual meetings, webinars, podcasting (in 1997!), streaming videos, wearable smart name badges (at tradeshows), private online communities for corporate research and co-creation, targeted mobile advertising, and autonomous vehicles.

It was thrilling, fun, and rewarding.

In 2019, I arrived at a fork in the road.  I reached the halftime of my career.  It was a good time to self-reflect, leading to the discovery of an inner desire to move from success to significance.

In a decision based on faith, I pivoted and stepped through the proverbial open door to personal finance.  That door led to another.  I stepped through that door, and another door opened.  This is how I began my financial advising journey.

Instead of impatience, I opted for trust and obedience.  I turned my second-guessing into an honest hunger for knowledge.  I was a sponge and absorbed as much knowledge as possible in financial advising and financial planning.  I wanted to learn as much as I could about this industry.

Along the way, I became a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional (CFP®), a Chartered Financial Consultant® (ChFC®), a Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor™ (CRPC™), and a fee-only advisor.

"Looking back on it now, it makes a lot of sense."

I made my share of mistakes with my own funds.  I don't want that to happen to anyone else.  I was also a client of a financial advisor since my 20s.  I didn't know it then, but he was a ðŸ¦´ Bone Collector, and I stuck with him for 20+ years because I didn't know any better.

Now, I'm setting out to be the advisor I wish I had.  More importantly, I'm setting out to be the advisor who guides my clients to discover their purpose and significance for their finances.

I love my clients.   I love my job.

Meanwhile, I'm on my own journey, a life-long pursuit to seek and discover what it means to be a great financial professional.  I expect to continuously learn new ways to perfect, innovate, and make a difference through this craft.

Born in Hong Kong, I immigrated to the US with my family when I was a young boy.  We settled in Framingham, a suburb of Boston.  I'm a die-hard Celtics, Red Sox, Patriots, and Bruins fan, which I've proudly passed down to my kids.  In addition to having had my FINRA Series 7 and Series 66 license, I'm also a licensed real estate agent in Arizona and life and health insurance professional.  I earned my Bachelor of Science in Math and Computer Science, as well as Cognitive Science and Psychology from Carnegie Mellon University, and an MBA from the University of Arizona's Eller School of Business.

I've been married to the love of my life for 23 years, and we are blessed with three awesome children.  I'm fluent in Mandarin Chinese and attend and serve at Cornerstone Church in Chandler.

Please look at my calendar and make an appointment to get to know each other better.  If you're not ready, don't worry.  You can subscribe to my "Why Didn't Anyone Tell Me About This Before?" newsletter, where I share some of my a-ha's and learnings along this journey.

I look forward to getting to know you more.

Yours Truly,

George
