My Story

George Kao Financial Planner Advisor | Reach One Teach One Financial | R1T1 | George Kao CFP ChFC CRPC MBA

My philosophy is to help as many as possible (Reach) while making those I'm helping smarter and savvier with their finances (Teach), all with an eternal focus.

I got here through divine intervention.  That's right!  If God didn't make me walk down this path, I might have never taken the leap.

"My plans aren’t your plans, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord."

                                                                       -Isaiah 55:8

You see, I spent the first 25 years of my career focused on building some of the world's most innovative technologies (at that time).  This was what I was trained in.  Some of these cool techs include virtual classrooms and virtual meetings, webinars, podcasting (in 1997!), streaming videos, wearable smart name badges (at tradeshows), private online communities for corporate research and co-creation, targeted mobile advertising, and autonomous vehicles.

It was thrilling, fun, and rewarding.

In 2019, I arrived at a fork in the road.  I reached the halftime of my career.  It was a good time to self-reflect, leading to the discovery of an inner desire to move from success to significance.

By divine intervention, I pivoted and stepped through the proverbial open door to financial advising.  That door led to another, which led to another.  This is how I began my financial planning journey.

Learning to trust and be obedient, I turned hesitance into an honest hunger for knowledge.  I was a sponge and began to absorb as much information as I could in financial advising and financial planning.  I wanted to learn everything about this industry.

Along the way, I passed the Series 7, Series 66, and Life and Health Insurance licensing exams, the Arizona real estate exam, and obtained several industry designations such as CFP® (CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™), ChFC® (Chartered Financial Consultant®), CRPC™ (Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor™), and became an independent, fee-only advisor.

"Looking back on it now, it makes a lot of sense."

I made my share of mistakes with my own funds.  I don't want that to happen to anyone else.  I was also a client of a financial advisor since my 20s.  I didn't know it then, but he was a 🦴 Bone Collector, and I stuck with him for 20+ years because I didn't know any better.

Now, I'm setting out to be the advisor I wish I had.  My mission is to be a biblically-centered advisor who cares for, gets to know, and proactively guides my clients to become financially free and to do it with an eternal stewardship mindset, sending treasures forward to where they matter.

I love my clients.   I love my job.

I also teach retirement planning as an adjunct faculty at Grand Canyon University.

Born in Hong Kong, I immigrated to the US with my family when I was a young boy.  We settled in Framingham, a suburb of Boston.  I'm a die-hard Celtics, Red Sox, Patriots, and Bruins fan, which I've proudly passed down to my kids.  I earned my Bachelor of Science in Math and Computer Science, as well as Cognitive Science and Psychology from Carnegie Mellon University, and an MBA from the University of Arizona's Eller School of Business.

I've been married to the love of my life for 24 years, and we are blessed with three incredible children.  I'm fluent in Mandarin Chinese and attend and serve at Cornerstone Church in Chandler.

Please look at my calendar and make an appointment to get to know each other better.  If you're not ready, don't worry; you can subscribe to my "Why Didn't Anyone Tell Me About This Before?" newsletter, where I share some of my a-ha's and learnings along this journey.

I look forward to getting to know you more.

Yours Truly,

George
